Born in Turkey and raised in Germany, Alkanoglu attended the Peter Behrens School of Arts in Düsseldorf and Hochschule der Künste in Berlin before receiving a Master of Architectural Design at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. His creative focus lies in the exploration of futuristic designs through spatial, material, and technological innovations. Notable projects of his recent work have been installed in various metropolitan areas in the United States including Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Boston, New York, Baltimore, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta, Denver, Dallas, and Washington D.C. Within his academic background, Volkan Alkanoglu has served as the Director for Graduate Studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA and has been part of the design faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, CA, and Harvard University, Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, MA. He holds the designation of LEED Accredited Professional in the USA. We selected inspiration images such as a diagram showcasing a model for ‘therapy in response to cancer patients’, taxonomical graphs of ‘air pollution’, ‘microscopic projections’ of research produced in the Robinson Lab, and photographs of dancers performing a choreography in a dramatic and colorful light inside the Dance Cube. We noticed how all these processes constantly evolved, shifted, and moved. Inflight is trying to capture this movement and development. Situated within the atrium of the new ILSB building, the artwork aims to inspire students, faculty, staff, and the many visitors who come to explore the state-of-the-art facility. islands (Noodles, Hogg, Apple, Bird and Governors Island) into a manufactured peninsula in the early 20th Century which is now known to us as East Boston. The artwork visualizes the ‘lost’ islands as a historic reference and aims to celebrate its legacy. Each of the five structures features a frame which captures views of its surrounding natural and urban context. The ‘Islands’ are fixed to pivot tubes which allow them to playfully rotate while constantly changing its state and creating new experiences for its environment. It is inspired by the soft, colorful and iconic landscapes surrounding Durango and the Fort Lewis College.&nbsp;Wrapping around two brick facades, the installation partly eliminates the corner and parapet of the concert hall introducing analternative tectonic solution to the building volume. With hundreds of individual and unique components, the art piece appears to be in motion and constantly changing. It represents the mobility and dynamic which this college has to offer as a center of cultural development and environmental appreciation.The choice of vibrant colors is a homage to the picturesque Durango landscape while providing an opportunity to celebrate multiplicity, diversity and integration on the Fort Lewis campus. With its fluid forms and landscape of colors, the art piece welcomes its visitors, guests, and the local community to campus and the concert hall.We would like to thank Mary Lyn and Richard Ballantine for their vision, support and dedication towards the realization of this project. Those fluffy, airy, white cushions simply resemble a picturesque landscape. We seem ready to dive in and play around those beautiful formations. Cloud Scape is the manifestation of this dream and realized as a blue immersive environment hosting of a series of white large scale ‘cloud alike’ furniture and pavilions.Just like the children chasing around the formations, our art work is in motion. It represents the emergence of one state towards another state as clouds do. The cloud formation appears to be changing, evolving, moving, and in constant flux.The project is located at the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport and fabricated out of polyurethane coated white Medite and consists of four cloud structures. The design is assembled like a large 3-dimensional puzzle, forming elegant, soft and dynamic volumes. The abstract cloud shapes are distributed throughout the space and connected to each other forming several opportunities for play and fun. It creates a visual and formal connection between the newly established Eviva community with the adjacent Denver Arts District and its cultural agenda. The artwork is fabricated ouf of hundreds of unique and individual CNC cut aluminum pieces.&nbsp;The project specifically engages with architectural elements such as the corner and the facade. Composed out of hundreds of unique and individual elements, the plume-alike&nbsp; compositions form an abstract landscape of geometries which perform several tasks. They act as an ornament to the building, they communicate between the audience and its architectural context and they play magic tricks by producing OP art a-like effects. Bloom represents the mobility and dynamic nature of the Golden Triangle community, a neighbourhood that provides the City of Denver with a center for its cultural development.
